notes / recommendations

notes

  • the playground rubber is past due for sealing.
    • there is a heavy amount of loose granules.  this means that the sun exposure has caused the topcoat to break away and it has worn thin
    • cracks and holes are showing up in several locations.
    • the sealing will help but the integrity of the of the rubber has been compromised due to lack of maintenance
    • it should be watched closely for new cracks and holes and should be resealed in 2-3 years.
  • the play equipment is in good shape for its age.  the only obvious sign of age it to the decks.  they are faded with age.  since the equipment is mostly upper-body and does not include a significant amount of decks, recoating or replacement of the decks (when the time comes) would likely add 10 years or more to the life of the structure.

recommendations:  now

  • no additional maintenance required

recommendations:  within next 2 years

  • keep an eye out for additional rubber cracks / holes

maintenance
  • bolts checked/tightened
  • equipment and rubber pressure washed
  • rubber sealed

site evaluation
  • astm signage - permanent sign still in good conditions
  • ADA compliant - with 3 elevated elements, 1 ground level (1 type) is required.  this playground has 7 ground level events

notes
  • for this playground, fraying rope on the spider climber is the first thing we would expect to start breaking down.  the red is a little faded, but it all looks like its in good shape. (pic 1)
  • the rubber had a good sized hole when we looked at it a couple months ago.  this time there were several new holes.  its an indication that the rubber is overdue for sealing and has worn thin.  even with sealing, thin rubber is more prone to damage and may require patches in the future.  (pic 2-4)
  • the red rope won't last forever.  if the decision is every made to replace the rope of the spider climber, this would be an ideal time to recap the rubber.
  • as your facing the playground from the blacktop, the closest corner to your right has some mud issues.  when it rains, the water washes down the hill with the portables and brings water and mud onto the rubber
